PostSubject: Fishie Rapture :(   Fishie Rapture :( EmptyFri Sep 09, 2011 10:38 pm

Just got a GBR last week and now he's missing!!! I saw him 2 days ago, figured she was hiding yesterday.... And moved stuff around today when I couldn't find her Rolling Eyes So I started to count my other fish and realized I lost 3 neon tetras as well!!! The only thing I added was a dwarf African frog?! Any ideas? I checked my water and everything was good??!!

what other fish are in the tank?i have several african dwarf frogs and i have seen them eat shrimps and baby guppies.they are opportunistic and if it fits in there mouth and they can eat it they will.buti wouldnt put it past another fish.as far as the ram goes that sucks.no body, skeleton, or anything?possible jump?

3 neon tetra
5 skirt tetra
2 Congo
1 rainbow shark
1 Chinese algee eater
1 gourami
1 common kribenses
3 Parkisonian rainbows
4 roseline shark
1 dwarf African frog- still really small
2 small platys
1 albino tiger barb- special Ed. He let's us pet him:-p
I checked everywhere and can't find anything. The congos r really aggressive so I don't know if the GBR died and then they ate her..... I can totally c them eating the neon tetras. Whenever I put ghost shrimp they swallow them like nothing. Just seems weird my lil platys r still there....

Are you familiar with the behavior of the Chinese "algae eater?" They don't really eat any algae and will more often than not just attempt to latch on to your other fish and suck their slime coat. This is really not a good fish for anything. Not saying this is why your fish are missing, but just thought I'd throw out that info and suggest maybe getting him out of your tank.

hmmmm..i dont see a particular fish that would target the ram unless those congos are really big.but i do see a few fishes in that line up that would dispose of the corpse rather quikly.it seems strange that you also list platys and tetras living but your ram is gone.mysterious.

The chinese algee eater is always going crazy cleaning up the tank?? U think I should just get a pleco? Or maybe a reticulated hillstream loach? I have one in my tank at work and he's pretty cool....

I picked up a couple bristle nosed plecos from Higher Thinking and they're fantastic. Got them as 1 inch babies about 1 month ago and they're already about 1.5 inches. One albino, one reticulated brown. Very healthy... recommend!

Thanks for the plug! Yea I would definitely recommend some plecos instead of the CAE. They get progressive worse as they age. What size tank do you have MzSunshine?

bow fronts are the bomb..i would go with a couple of the bristtle nose.maybe a pair?there are other algae eaters but i have several ancistris bristtle noses in various tanks as well as a number of pwople i know and they work well and are pretty flexable about tank mates and perameters.

Good grab. Good luck getting a zebra pleco, they cost a couple hundred dollars each...way too expensive for my taste, haha.

Zebra plecos are awesome. Wish there were a breeder in Oregon. I'd love to find someone who's in it for enjoyment of the hobby and willing to share. If you're out there... please call me. Smile

Im really thinking about getting a golden nugget Pleco. I saw one at the wet spot for 40. What do u think? Also can I put two little bristle nose plecostomus in a 46 tank? And can one go with a reticulated hillstream loach? I love plecos! I think theyre cool looking.

I have two small bristlenose plecos in my 20G. They are thriving. As soon as they get a bit bigger I'll move one or both. For now they are doing well. Gold nuggets are really beautiful. Not sure about whether 40 is a good price or not. I wonder if there are any locals who have a breeding pair.

gold nuggets are never cheap.particularly if it is 4 or more inches.if you are going to get it ask how long they have had it and check to see if it is skinny or imaciated.the first hurdle is making sure you have a healthy fish.these are generaly speaking wild caught plecos and some may harbor worms and or parasites.many of the parasites may be overcome by simple natural body defense systems but that wont happen if the fish in question is not eating or not being fed.sorry if this all seems real obvious to you but i have seen many skinny plecos that cost a bundle go down hill fast under the most competent care.

and the bristle noses are fine together its just the males that get territorial.in such a large tank with rock or wood work there should be enough spaces to keep the peace.or you could go one male and any number of females.and they should be fine with your loaches.
