Tube Anemones Empty
PostSubject: Tube Anemones   Tube Anemones EmptyWed Jul 20, 2011 1:55 am

i just got these tube anemones today for a coral trade.they look pretty sad now but i am hoping that they come around soon.although i dought it as the person who had them before me had them in a sump for several years prior to disturbing there home and transporting them to my house.once they perk up they should look nice.one is purple and the other i am not to sure of.

there tube is pretty unatractive as you can see.i am hoping that there isnt damage done as i have only delt with these once before and i lack some experience with these bad boys.

wow, i love the color on them, especially the hot pink one, im sure as they continue their recovery they will creep out of their tubes and be some truly epic anemones.
are they good filter feeders? what do they prey on? what do they eat?

these are predator anemones in the sense that they have really powerfull stings.cerianthus is the species i believe.and these anemones will eat shrimps, fishes unfortunate to wander into there inviteing tenticles and aparantly some planktonic creatures as well so basicaly anyhting that is living.i have been warned that they will harm many of the sesile inverts as well so no coral too close.i am going to test this theory at some point with some soft corals that can take some abuse.

ah, im curious as to the results when you begin the tests.
but will they eat excess food that may go into a sump, or would it be better to toss a few clowns and porcelain crabs (assuming their immunities could hold up), to handle some of that?

to my knowledge nothing will tolerate the sting of these.including clowns.i havent read anything about the porciline but from the books i have been reading they are pretty much loners.you can keep things that dont move and are far enough away from them not to get stung as these are anemones that cannot move either like others can.

i would even be willing to donate some test subjects, set aside order items for testing in there, lol.
i dont think its a bad idea at all to find out, as the book isnt always right.
very interested what ends up working in there if anything, and if not it will feed them, lol...

Tube Anemones Empty
PostSubject: Info I found in old book   Tube Anemones EmptyThu Jul 21, 2011 2:57 am

Cerianthus membranaceous

This Anemone requires that the temperature in the aquarium be lowered to below 68ºF for several months during the winter. It prefers periodic intermittent currents and needs moderate lighting within the aquarium.

Eating habits of the Tube Anemone can best be described as aggressive. After the lights are lowered it will capture its fish prey. It prefers to be fed often, even daily, with brine shrimp or pieces of fresh fish or shrimp.

•Minimum Tank Size / Length: 20 gallons (75 L), minimum for a single specimen
•Marine Lighting - How much light for anemones: Low, actinic lighting brings out their colors
•Temperature: 72° - 82° F (22° - 28° C). This Anemone requires temperatures below 68 F (20° C) for a few months during the winter.
•Salinity / Specific Gravity: 1.023 to 1.025
•Water Movement: Low to moderate
•Water Region: Bottom of the aquarium

The Tube Anemone is semi-aggressive, yet as far as "anemone" type corals go, they do not have as powerful of a sting as true anemones. Several Tube Anemone specimens can be kept in an aquarium, but they are not compatible with other anemone species. Though they do coexist with their own kind, they do not get along with their "cold" water siblings. Care should be taken to provide other corals with plenty of room. Make sure when the Tube Anemone comes out at night, their tentacles do not come in contact with delicate corals.

In the wild they have a commensal relationship with a variety of crustaceans and worm species, with these species living within their tubes. In the aquarium, you can include small hermit crabs, small shrimps, and most worms. Triggerfish and large angelfish, as well as large crabs lobsters, and snails should not be kept with them. They do not host clownfish, in fact they have been known to eat more than a few of them.

i presume this is a book speaking here.and as usual there is conflicting information.but i am glad that this informs that there are inverts that will work out..i wonder what comensal crustaceans they are talking about.i hope it is porciline and anemone shrimps.i could get a bunch of those.the person i got it from had it for several years and has given me a heads up on things.its still nice to get some research done though.and as far as stings go i would say it is very potent.i own six differnt anemones and this one is by far the most aggresive..up there with carpet anemones.

i agree, while books are nice, i would still conduct some tests as there seem to be exceptions in all cases...
i also hope porcelain craps end up with immunity.

PostSubject: Re: Tube Anemones   Tube Anemones EmptyWed Jul 27, 2011 2:38 am

so i couldnt wait till i got silversides so i caught one of my small goldfishes to feed off to the anemones.its funny as when the fish hit the water the anemone seemed to react.tentacles flowing a little differnt almost like the winds had changed or flow for that matter.the gold fishg also seemed to swim about in a frantic fashion as it had not been aclimated properly.
then it swims right past the purple tube without touching a single tenticle
the gold fish then loops around only to get caught by a few of the pinks tenticles.

it seems as though the fish is stuck and begins to twitch in the anemones tenticles as it tries to pull it to its center mouth.
it gets its last burst of energy and tears free from the pink only to get grabbed by the purple anemone wich then quikly swallows the fish whole with not much fight.fast enough that all i could see is some gold in the tube as it got pulled further in.

so it would apear that these are growing more segments to there tubes and are shaping them to the flow if i am not mistaken.rather interesting in my book.i am now thinking they need a deeper tank.but they look fine.we will see.

my friend was able to get small tube anemones so i couldnt pass em up.one purple and one a cream color with a differnt colored mouth. they had fused together when i had removed them form the bag and it has seemed that one is tubeless.not a good shipper i guess or at least the next time the capturer could seperate bag them.everything seems fine as they are both open at some points of the day.fingeres crossed for it to build a new tube.
