Cyanobacteria (Red Slime)

I discoved a way to kill red slime totaly by accident. I was using Precision Kalkwasser to kill aptasia when I noticed that the red slime that was starting to develope in my tank would dye around where I would kill the Aptasia. So I decided to exsperiment. I turned off the filtration and flow in my tank and applied the Kalkwasser directly to the red Slime. After about 15 minutes I turned the filtration and flow back on, and within a day the slime was gone. I use a solution of 1 teaspoon kalkwasser to 1 ounce of distilled water. This seems to be enough to kill Aptasia as well as Red Slime. Kalkwasser raises the calcium level in your tank so make sure you keep a check on your levels.

P.S. I hope all you Tanksters have as much luck with it as me, and remember I am not a marine biologist. I am just a Salwater fish hobbiest trying to find the least exspensive way to control unwanted guests in my tank. Your results may differ from mine so you should take my advice at your Own Risk!!!

Interesting. Well, calcium hydroxide is very caustic, and has a pH of about 12-13. I wouldnt be suprosed if it killed everything it touched in a marine tank. Things you should check upon repeat experiments would be pH and calcium. Before and after application. Also check out alkalinity. I have a feeling they are roller coastering around causing a calcium imbalance.

You are absolutly right about keeping a close I on PH, calcium, and alkalinity and I am. I'm going very slow with the process and so far so good. The last thing I want to do is give my little buddies a shock.
