Anacharis Question Empty
PostSubject: Anacharis Question   Anacharis Question EmptyWed Jan 11, 2012 9:04 pm

I was canoeing in a local lake a few weeks ago and I found some very large anacharis growing about 10 feet off the shoreline. I scooped some up and brought it home. I put it in a spare tank with unheated water and an extra light that I had laying around. So now, the anacharis is doing really well, sending off new buds and growing long roots. I'm thinking about putting it in one of my tanks but I'm concerned about possible parasites or other unforeseen problems. Does anyone have experience or advice about converting local cold water anacharis to a tropical freshwater tank?

well there are a few things that come to mind when it comes to treating plants for parasites.anything from copper to bleach.certain plants are more tolerant to these treatments than the next and i personaly feel that most of the treatments are too harsh on the plants so i usualy just do a bucket with some hydrogen peroxide rinse and then a double dose of quik cure for a day.this should destroy bacterias as well as protazoan parasites.just a precaution when i get things i am not sure about.copper is another invertabrate killer but some plants dont respond well . i believe anacharis is pretty resiliant twords just about everything.oh and there are several types of anacharis some of wich are no longer saleable as the are invasive all are pretty cool if you ask me though.

You should also acclimate the plants as slow as possible as if you heat them up too fast they will all melt in your tank creating a bit of a mess.I used to keep some pond plants in a bucket outside in the shade and wait a few days before bringing them inside to let them acclimate a few more days at room temp then into the tank after a rinsing in water.Just thought I would share a bit of wisdom.
