that is a interesting question to ponder.presumably they would retain the want to regulate its own light and flow needs or test its surroundings?assuming that is what they are doing during the move.i have yet to have much experience with fungias moving as i usualy have mine surrounded by rock..i gues i gotta clear up the sand bed.

so everyone is getting along just fine wich is great but unfortunatly my tougue coral got an infection deep in the middle of its bodies tissue.this system is in check so the onlt thing i can acount for being a factor is possible damage from the brain corals sweeping tentacle when the toungue had moved close to the brain and that this sytems water is most likely saturated with soft coral toxins since i have not had carbon in for a while, wich i was not aware of.this may have weakened the coral and i must admit i neglected to take it out for a week as all my tanks are full of corals that would very easily cause more damage.i finaly found a tank to put it in for a little ICU but everything i did did not seem to help.i lost my toungue coral entirely.Sad this is why you should frag your corals.i am left with none.

I know I know , it has been a loong time since and update. It has been a rough ride so to speak as I have had a tank crash with a overdose of GFO and also a literal tank Crash as I had the tank bust a seam on me. What a disaster, what nightmares are made of.This here is a picture of the tank right before a big hit to the SPS population form the phosphate stripping. So Sad.

I still need to clean up the cord clutter but here is a pic about the same time with the AI Sols on a heavy blue setting.

A 2015 update with the corals getting there colors back from the previous incident. It took some time but even the zoas are looking pretty darn good.

Here is with the Sols

and here is with the flash on.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Dscf1012

Maintenance wise the tank is getting roughly bi weekly water changes of 7-10 gallons and monthly carbon changes. Calcium and alkalinity dosing for the SPS has been going on for quite some time. I do a Fuel dose here and there and a few drops of iodine once a week.

Cut a few things up a while ago and I am contemplating putting somethings back on the rock work.
Alien Eye Leptastrea is going to stay, along with some pot of gold Favia, not sure about the others here.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Dscf0310

On another note I am still having troubles with my acroporas. They are blaching from the bottom up and I am pretty sure it is not chemistry, it did get rather cold a couple nights due to a partially open window but not sure about that either. I am thinking I may need to dip a couple and see if there are any things unseen to the eye. If not that then maybe it will pass with basic tank stability. Makes me sad though as things were just growing and coloring up so well. Mad

Another update, I have had some nasty turf algae start to spread more aggressively so I added some urchins to combat it. The urchins have caused several corals to collide and this means some damage was done and a couple loses have occurred. I have acquired a good amount of new frags of acropora in the last few months from people in the nearby cities and unfortunately I believe my acros have contracted some ailment. It seems like I have had a good amount of bad news but I am far from giving up. Just gotta persevere.

I have removed a rock that was coated in turf algae and gold polyps and replaced it with a new piece of base rock that I had drilled for frag plugs, I am going to put a few of my tortuosas on it. And the urchins are slowly eating some of the nasty algae in the tank that nothing else would, that turf algae is the devil. Colors in my corals are also pretty amazing on some of em, not bad at all.

I usually use a masonry bit but this time alls I could find was a trusty old half inch wood bore bit. Gotta get the job done right. Worked out just fine as you can see.

As far as updates go I did add a nasty rogue file fish that started nipping at my euphylllias a few weeks ago. I didn't pay much attention as I have a bunch of hammers and frogspawns and this made me confident that he could not inflict enough damage to one single specimen. Well a couple days ago I saw that one of my prize crocea clams was retracted into its shell with some slime emitting from it with this little fiel fish sitting right next ti it. I shoed him away and observed some over the next hour and sure enough he comes back and take s a bite out of the clam mantle. I had to remove a large number of corals but I got is A$$ Out! Now I am just fumed about it, this clam was years old and spawning in my tank, beautiful colors...Did I mention that I still have aptasia in the tank. GRRRR.

Things are looking pretty good coral wise so I figured this would be a good time to get things listed during a time of success.

Tank Specs:55 Gallon Display 55 gallon baffless sump filled most of the way so about 100 gallons water volume.

Illumination:Display is lit with 2 AI Sol LEDs and the zoanthid refugium lighting is a Aquabeauty LED.

Filtration: is a Aqueon 55 gallon HOB Filter with carbon and a moded coralife 125 skimmer with catalina pump.

Circulation: is a catalina 1000GPH return pump Td off, a maxi jet 1200, a small koralia at the other end of the display, and a koralia 750 in the sump to keep the coral happy.

Dosing: Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Sulfate, Sodium Carbonate, Calcium Chloride, Carbon Dose, Aquavitro Fuel, weekly and Biweekly water changes of 10-15 gallons using kent.

Target Parameters: PH 8, Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 4-7, Phosphates .1, Salinity 1.023, Magnesium 1200+, KH 7-8, Calcium 420.

Feeding: Fish get Omega One marine pellets, frozen brine, mysis, blood worms, and coral bumbo. Mostly broadcast fed.

OK OK, one thats not cropped so you can see all the clutter still.
I have moved out the brain along with a few other corals. As the LPS and Acros grow there is less and less room.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Wp_20110

And look at these hammers, almost trimming time again.

Lets see here, this rock has since been covered in coraline and the corals have changed but basically the rock was a success.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Wp_20110

As you can see the higher flow next to the blue stag has caused some clustered growth particularly in the tips.

I wanted to add some surface area to the left side of the tank now that the right side was coming to. I still wanted my Euphyllias underneath so I could't go with the classic bolder or the plate rock. So my solution was some "Tongan" Branch rock to add that valuable coral grow space but still let some light through to the LPS underneath.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Sam_0912

Some choice pieces of branch rock were chosen for this new rock work.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Sam_0911

Marine epoxy for the sealed seems here, no drilled holes, rods, or zip ties. Although in retrospect they would have made this much stronger. I sure hope that SPS and coraline coem on strong and act as cement el natural.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Sam_0913

All fused together and ready for action...Acro action that is.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Sam_0910

I really like it, now lets hope it fits alright.

Just to show the actual scale of this piece here is a picture of myself, Badxgillen ,holding the new rock formation. This was all just very nice base rock I had acquired over the years from other hobbyists breakdowns, makes me want to construct more arcs but I don't want maintenance to be too cumbersome. I have a few other pieces but not quite as large as these and not nearly as jagged, most of these longer pieces of base rock come in smoother.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Sam_0914

Now lets get this thing wet!

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Sam_0916

Now just look at that! It was a bit of trouble getting the old rock out and getting this one in but well worth it...A word of the wise for people doing rock work like this in the future, rock scratches the glass much more easily than you may think and I actually put a couple dings in my front pane while inserting this large structure. At least I can only be angry at myself here but boy was it awkward.

55 Nano Reef Rebuild - Page 2 Sam_0915

I plan on covering this thing with quality acropora and maybe, just maybe a few montiporas.
Say goodbye to those frag racks!
