Birds Nest nests Empty
PostSubject: Birds Nest nests   Birds Nest nests EmptyTue Sep 18, 2012 1:17 am

Just wanted to start a thread with the birds nest corals in mind.these little guys are sweet.wether its blunt or spiney pink or green these are one of nicer SPS corals to look at.i have come accross a few frags of a few types and they all seem to be doing well.i wish i had taken a picture when i first got them but all well.i might be able to dig one up..maybe.this one has been growing for several monthsand has made alot of progress.the flash really drowns out the colors but it is pretty in person.i will have to borrow a camera to get the color under the 20,000 kelvins.

I actually love Seriatopora (birds nest) corals. I have a pink hystrix that was really sad looking when I got it. Now its glowing pink and growing. These guys actually like my ultra bright tank. Flow is important too.

I'm going to snap a pic tomorrow when the 10K lights are on. Now that I think about it, Seriatopora seem to look best under "daylight" rather than actinics.

There are only 2 species of Seriatopora that I'm aware of in the reef trade (hystrix and calendularia) I think that's the second one, someone correct me if that's not it. Anyway, there must be other species. Why don't we see them for sale? Wonder what they look like? Or maybe there's only 2 species on the Earth.

I'll try to put the photo up tomorrow. Maybe someone else has a really nice birdsnest to show?

rm.

I forgot to post a pic.

Started as a tiny frag from AH that didn't look so good. Very pink now and has even grown since I took this photo. Seriatopora are great corals. I'd like to get one of those S. calendularia (or however its spelled) like badx has. They're usually not that colorful, but have plenty of charm and grow on you just like hystrix.

This guy gets lots of light and flow. He seems to like it because he's growing pretty fast. You can tell which way the flow is going by the longer growth branches.

NICE! that sure did color up.you are going to have to frag that bad boy soon i am sure.give it a couple months Laughing was looking around and did find the other birds nest types but i have not seen them in any store i have been to.
seriatapora - Hystix
Caliendrum
Stellata
Aculeata
Dendriticata
some of these have some odd growth that may not be observed until it gets to a certain size without the trained/experienced eye.
