Why is it that magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate are used together? Is it okay to just use magnesium chloride?

I will have to look up the article but I believe it is because of the sodium\salt part of the mix that will cause an ionic imbalance after prolonged usage.

Magnesium chloride actually contains about three times as much chloride as magnesium, so boosting magnesium gives an even larger boost to chloride. Still, the natural chloride level is so high that the effects are small on a percentage basis. A certain mixture of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate has no net effect on seawater's major anions (chloride and sulfate).

This was from the reef keeping site...Good stuff.

So just using magnesium chloride will raise chloride levels high, and leave the sulfate levels low.The result would be a ionic imbalance, which would be bad.

That is the jist of it, as it mentioned it takes a long time to make a difference but to those tanks that strive to avoid water changes by keeping water stable via chemical additions\supplements would most likely to be effected. Hence the use of both chloride and sulfate.
