Great article about some of the reasoning behind the brilliant coloring in some acropora species. Turns out it is an overlapping or multiple sets of the gene responsible for the colorful " sunscreen " that causes the more sought after morphs. Check it out here.

That is a good article that leaves me wanting to read some more. I like how it takes into account that some of the specimens without the extra coloration traits have adapted other means to exploit the environment.

It is getting pretty impressive on what we are now able to do with the technology available. I wish I could get in and talk with a person in this field of research or at least see some of the projects being done.So Cool.

There is some interesting things going on at the OSU but I am not sure if any or the marine research is open to the public. Might need to talk to one of the biology professors.

Some more similar findings , much of wich is already known but a nice recap nevertheless.

There are some pretty interesting facts in the writings such as the reason growth tips can exhibit brighter colors and that brighter colored corals may have a slower growth due to the energy needed for the added light protection. Here is a quote...

We found the pink and purple proteins act as sunscreens for the corals by removing substantial light components that might otherwise become harmful to the algae hosted in their tissue. Corals rely on these light-dependent miniature plants, the so-called zooxanthellae, since they provide a substantial amount of food.
