72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank Empty
PostSubject: 72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank   72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank EmptySat May 12, 2012 12:30 am

This is my planted tank in Albany.

November 2011
72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank 11-7-210

January 2012
72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank 1-18-211

March 2012
72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank 3-26-210

April 2012
72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank 4-10-210

Since the last picture in April I've reduced the fish load from 22 tetras (neons/cardinals) and 12 black neon tetras down to just two cardinals and one neon (the last three sneaky fish). My plan is to breed Albino Long Fin Plecos.

Current fish load:
2 Chinese Algae Eaters
3 Siamese Algae Eaters
2 imposter Siamese Algae Eaters (didn't know better when I bought them - yellowish fins)
8 Nerite Snails
5 Amano Shrimp
5 Yoyo Loaches

Plant Load:
72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank 3-26-211

Tank Specs:
72 gallon bowfront
Planted with Miracle Gro Organic, flourite and laterite in late September 2011
Fluval FX5 Filter
48" T8 bulbs X2. (less than 1W/Gallon) till February 2012
48" T5 bulbs X6 (more than 4W/Gallon) till present (12 hour light cycle) - At this point I added pressurized CO2
Fertilized with homemade liquid fertilizer (recipe from The Krib)

PostSubject: Evolved into CO2   72 Gallon Walstad Planted Tank EmptySat May 12, 2012 2:44 am

It was never a textbook Walstad tank, but I bought her book and followed advice from Dustinsfishtanks before I set it up - so I give a lot of credit to her. This was my first dirted tank. Since then I've done a 90 gallon blackwater (angels), a ten gallon shrimp breeder tank, and a 26 gallon bowfront (whatever fish my sister decides to remember to feed). All the plants in all the tanks are thriving (without CO2 or high lights) except the Hygro in my sister's 26 bowfront. The 90 gallon is kind of an experiment tank I set up for a friend. He wanted a very low maintenance tank so he does water changes only once a month or longer. Walstad says this is common with dirted tanks because they end up being Nitrite furnaces. So far his fish are happy and his plants are growing (low light).

I really didn't intend to get pressurized CO2 or high lights but I had money to burn and I like the project aspect of owning a tank. I think the next project for me will be building an inline CO2 diffuser for the FX5.

I'm pretty new here, and I don't know how trading works or who is cool yet, but if you ever want anything I have - just let me know. I'm always up for trades as long as both parties are happy.

Oh and about Plecos, I got some plecos in a trade with Egbar (so far the only person I've met or traded with - and she's cool). I bid on some plecos off Aquabid from my favorite seller "Beviking" but I was outbid. I'm still looking for about 6 more BN Long Fin Pleco juveniles. I just need some plecos from another genetic line. I don't know much about fish inbreeding but I figure it can't be good.

as fara s the plecos Animal House in corvallis might have a couple but they are a pretty penny when they are large.you arent going for any standard long fin bristlenoses?i have a friend who i swear has an FX5 wich i am envious of and i know he built his own CO2 diffuser.higher learning is the man.his tank is CO2 and dosing regements and look much like yours....a jungle.as fara s trading as you said if both parties are happy and there are no offended people then most things are all good.i wouldnt mind grabbing some goodies from you at some point.
