so... just to add on a bit to the 75 gallon build thread, I FINALLY got around to hanging the halides over my 56 gallon tank. I have been trying to figure out a solution to this or a long time bc of the stud position in the wall and ceiling. This was a great solution and I am so psyched to have a nice open top (no more glass cover with salt creep!) and easy access to the tank. AND- the light quality in the tank is much much better now. Here's a before and after...

Advantages: No top is cheaper, light is more "pure"
Disadvantages: more evaporation, fish can jump, things can fall or get into the tank easier.

haha humidity indeed... Bt that's what the dehumidifier is for I love open tops. I have had a couple fish jump from my 29 gallon tank a couple years back but otherwise I havent had any problems. I think you get better oxygen transfer as well and yes, the light is way better. I actually have the glass top for this but am happy to have it off now. Things can fall in but I can get in it easier too I always have my hands on my tanks... I hand feed some of the fish in there too...
