WTF?!?! 2 foot long sweepers on a fungia?

My Orange plate coral was doing somethign tonight I have never seen. It was sending out some sort of feathered sweeper tentacle 1 to 2 feet long, shooting it out and letting it flow around then rapidly pulling it back in then shooting it out again. I watched this for over half an hour til the lights went off tonight. Has anyone seen this before? I couldnt find much on the web... does this thing sting or is it just trying to figure out its surroundings and where it can move?

that would be interesting if it was a means to find a safe path of movement but i presume that it is more like fishing.i have had galaxia and my brain coral do something similar just not as fast.on that note i have never seen a fungia put out a sweeper tentacle before let along one that is that long.i am really glad you captured that on camera being such a unusual behaviour.

Now thats some discovery channel stuff right there Some of the coral behaviours have never been documented and the reasons to these reactions is not fully understood.You may just have to recreate the same enviromental stimulations as before and hope it happens again and you can pin point the cause.
