PostSubject: need a hair algae eater!   Fri Nov 30, 2012 12:38 am

I have a hair algae outbreak in one of my tanks... it has been pretty bad for about 3 or 4 months now. I tried a sea hare and it died in a week, didnt touch it. I have a scopas tang in the tank and it wont eat it either. I have some media in the tank to reduce phosphates but even with manual removal there's a lot left to go.

Is a blenny the way to go? I have that scopas in the tank and it is a 46 gallon and i dont want to add another fish if it wont eat the algae... any ideas?

Try running your magnesium around 1500-1600 or a little more to burn it out. I heard tech M by kent works best

good thing you have all those extra additives around Smile on another note i believe the sea hares do a fine job you just want one that is doing its job at the store and the smaller the better in my opinion as they dont have the longest life spans to begin with.maybe you can fins a small urchin too?

well i finally got my lawnmower blenny out of QT and he's chowin'! I was afraid he wasnt going to eat the hair algae because I sawhim only pick at rocks but now he is going to town on the stuff! I wish I had gotten video of him earlier when he was gorging. I have so much of that stuff he is going to be a FAT fish in a couple of months. I certainly dont have to worry about feeding him Smile Those hermits will have nice clean shells too Wink

thats sweet that your blenny is hungry for hair algae.keep the nutrients down and it will be all good in the end.At that point you will have to figure out what to feed the blenny since all his grazing pastures will be gone.

Algae pellets that sink are sometimes eaten but they will almost always go for the spiralina brine shrimp.I had one that loved the black worms too.
